Olivier from Switzerland got in touch with me recently to ask for advice on a frame he was having made by XACD. He was considering options I’d never seen before and so I asked him how he knew about them…
He pointed me to four French companies – all of whom look like they sell frames made by XACD! Turns out the UK isn’t the only place that has ‘men in shed’ brands. So let’s say bonjour to the first of these ‘hommes dans les hangars’:
Skyde Components offer a 9 frame range, from mountain bikes, through 29’ers to Rohloff, single speed and road frames – with lots of custom options too! Sadly the English version of the site isn’t up yet and because they deliver part of it via Flash I can’t cut and paste into a translator so I’m figuring out what I can here!
The site’s so ‘Flashy’ I’ve only just found the section that shows the bikes! Clicking above/below the menu bar opens up another section (Arghh! Stop it flashing at me!). Pretty it might be but it’s a little dodgy to find stuff (and if he gets the UK version working it’d save some wear and tear on Bing Live Translate!).
If I’m reading this right, the main man is Claude Bergame, an engineer, who setup Skyde out of his passion for all things cycling – you’re probably better off nipping over and having a bit of a poke around, it’s a site packed full of stuff. Head over to his Flickr and you’ll even see pictures of his XACD factory visit!
Bikes of interest include the Ajenjo which is a rather nice looking ‘hardcore hardtail’ maybe needs a dab of slacker head angle but reminds me of a Dialled Bikes Kobe Ti:
There’s always the question there about the extended seat tube – that is until you see that they do a seriously extended seat tube xc model for the New Cycling race team!
I’m going to step gingerly away from that seat mast option, heaven know’s what kind of twang that’s going to put on the top tube/seat stay junction area…
But do take a look at some of the finishing options, XACD can do an interesting line in masked polishing – such as putting a name into the down tube or putting sand blasted bands in the middle of a polished tube:
Grab your French/English dictionary and take a proper look over at http://www.skydecomp.fr/
I’ll be back with more later…
